COTTON CREATIONS  2022 QLD HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIPS, 4 -5  June, 2022

Spectators were treated to another day of great hillclimb driving at Mount Cotton.  After a period of rainy weekends, the Cottons Creations 2022 Queensland Hillclimb Championship was held in beautiful sunshine over the weekend of 4 - 5 June. The entry included the two Deans, Amos and Tighe who would continue their close competition for outright honours. Dean Amos defending the title from 2021 whilst Dean Tighe was the champion in 2020. They are the joint winners of the 2021 New South Wales Hillclimb Championship. David Mahon, current Victorian and South Australian champion ventured north for a chance at the title.

 

Dean Amos driving his Gould GR55B Nicholson McLaren V8 set fastest time of day with a blistering time of 35.81 seconds to win his fourth title. His time was only 0.56 of a second from the outright circuit. Only 0.47 of a second separate Dean Amos from Dean Tighe finishing second with a 36.28 seconds time in his Hayabusa Supercharged powered Empire Wraith. Third was Warwick Hutchinson in his OMS 28 turbocharged Rotary Powered Vehicle with a 37.34 seconds run followed by David Mahon (Dallara Hayabusa F394) with a best run of 38.20 seconds.

 

A tie for fifth place outright between Doug Daniels (Nutec Formula Libre) and Neil Lewis (Fly-001) with both drivers recording their best run of 42.04 seconds and both setting their best time on their fourth run.

Fastest time set by a sedan driver was that of Gavin Taylor who finished in ninth place overall running a 44.46 seconds time in his Volkswagen Golf and set on his fifth run. This was 0.01 second quicker than Wayne Penrose in his Volkswagen Beetle (44.47 seconds set on his fourth run). Third fastest sedan driver was Tim Blake in his Subaru Impreza WRX turbo with a 44.59 seconds run.

Quickest of the sports cars was Michael Larymore (Toyota MR 2, 46.92) which Michael set on his final run to finish from Jim Heymer Farrell L (46.99 set on his second run) with Ainsley Fitzgerald next in his Arrow Clubman in a best run of 47.30 seconds.

​

Fastest Lady award was won by Pauline Graham. Pauline won the Improved Production class (46.14 seconds) being faster than husband Ken Graham (46.33 seconds) sharing their Datsun 1600 SSS.

Best performance by a Historic car was that of Barry Smith driving his Ford V8 Special in Group K Post Vintage Thoroughbred cars from 1 January 1931 to 31 December 1949.
