CLUB RUNS

The Club offers its members the opportunity to take part in two types of runs. One is the Day Run held on various Sundays throughout the year and the other is the Mid-week run held regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month. There is also one weekend away, usually held in July.

These runs are organized to allow time for socializing as well as enjoying a drive with fellow enthusiasts.

Details of meeting times and places for the runs are advertised on the Calendar page of this website and also in the Octagon. A contact name is always given so that you can check on the latest details of the run.

"Watch the birdie, they say!!??....
I can't see any b....y birdie!!!

Most participants drive their MG but other makes are not excluded. Below are reports and photos of some recent runs held by MG Car Club.

JOINT RUN WITH SPRITE CAR CLUB – 28 FEBRUARY, 2010

This was a joint activity for the MGCCQ and the SCCQ.

We started with morning tea and welcome at the MGCCQ Clubrooms from 9:30am. At 10:45am we headed off via Sheldon and the Venman Bushland area to the MG hillclimb facility at Mt Cotton.

On arrival our guests had a good look at the hillclimb track so that they could appreciate the challenges that the hillclimb presents. This was followed by lunch, some picnic and some BBQ, and then a short working bee session to work off lunch and remove some dead tree branches out of the spectator area.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the run and the facilities at Mt Cotton. There was particular interest shown in Brant Rayment’s Midget and all its improvements.

RETIREES MIDWEEK RUN – 24 FEBRUARY, 2010

19 cars arrived at Doug Larsen Park at Beenleigh for the start of our run to the Gold Coast and Northern NSW hinterlands. Malcolm Campbell sent apologies as he had to work and for the first time in memory we had no MX5s on the run. John Tait took his yellow B-GT this time.

We left Beenleigh and took the now familiar roads to Canungra via Tambourine Village and the Mundoolan Connection Rd. The ever vigilant patrol car was watching but was left very disappointed as we all went past 20 km under the speed limit [sorry officer no Red MGB for you today] to Canungra.

We then went to Beechmont for morning tea. The country looked wonderful after all the recent rains, all green and lush, looking more like the Northern Rivers area.

After tea etc. we drove down to the Nerang-Murwillumbah Rd  and had good weather until about the Natural Arch area when the low cloud became rain, spoiling the view. At Chillingham we headed to Tyalgum and then on to Murwillumbah, still in light rain.

After passing through Murwillumbah it was up the Tweed Valley Way for 4 km to the Condong Sugar Mill then right into Clothiers Creek Rd past the “Madura” Tea plantation over the Highway and on to the Tweed Coast Rd then down to Hastings Point for lunch.

A friend of John Walker’s [driving from Mullumbimby] was waiting for him as John said we expected to be there about 12.45; unfortunately John forgot to add Queensland time. When we left for home John was still chatting with his friend.

Participants were:
Bruce & Tip Ibbotson  BMW Silver
Bill & June Spall   MGY  Green/black
Dennis & Diana Kelly  Toyota Corolla  White
John & Marian Tait  MGB GT  Yellow
Trevor & Joy Jones  MGA  Red

BREAKFAST RUN – 7 FEBRUARY, 2010

Breakfast run, 7th February - Report by Val Horgan; report by John Tait will be in the next Octagon.
(Photos by Val Horgan and Ian Fettes)

Despite the atrocious weather, six cars turned up at Keperra and we soldiered on despite the road being cut bear Eaton's Crossing (no warning!) by backtracking to get to our breakfast stop.

The eleven of us made the most of the situation even though the BBQs weren't working. Errol and John are obviously ex-boy scouts as they brought their own gas stoves and duly shared them. It was a lovely run and we all enjoyed the camaraderie.

Errol and Wendy were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Shame we didn't know in advance - we could have enjoyed a champagne breakfast.

MID WEEK RUN – 27 JANUARY, 2010

JANUARY MIDWEEK RUN
John Tait's trial of having a midweek run in January proved to be highly successful with over twenty cars taking part. The cars covered a range of types and models as seen in the photos ranging from an MGY through to a GT40 replica.

John has not yet submitted a report on the run, having become preoccupied with his 'new' MGB GT which he took delivery of at the conclusion of the midweek run. I guess we'll see the 'Hunny B' on the next Club run. Photos were provided by Malcolm Campbell and Stu and Wendy Gross.

FISH ‘n’ CHIPS RUN – 17 JANUARY, 2010 (John Tait)

It was most pleasing to see twenty cars of all makes, models and vintages assemble at the clubrooms for a late afternoon cruise to Cleveland lighthouse restaurant. John and Pat Walker’s MGA made a rather unusual arrival by cutting out after entering the driveway and then steadfastly refusing to start. After a bit of opening and closing of doors and bonnet, inspection by the experts on hand and some very serious head scratching, the A burst back into life, raring to get on with the run. We worked our way from Rocklea through Durack, Coopers Plains, Rochedale and some back roads around Sheldon to arrive at Cleveland without incident in the cool of early evening. A couple of club cars also met us at Cleveland. The take-away section of the restaurant was soon surrounded by a swarm of run participants placing orders. Eating and chatting continued on the grassed park area into the night – a sure sign that all attending had a good time.
