RACE RESULTS - QLD HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008

QLD HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIPS, Saturday, 31 May - Sunday, 1 June, 2008
A wet and oily track may have slowed a lot of cars and the field may have lost Peter Gumley on his second run when he had a mechanical failure but the spirit of friendship and co-operation shone through and brightened the weekend. The weather helped too, as the rain held off and the sun shone for most of the two days whilst competition was underway.

Alan McConnell was the only runner to post a sub-40s run and won the Queensland Hillclimb championship title, the John English Trophy for fastest Queenslander and the Paul Aitken Trophy for Motorcycle powered cars. Bill Norman fought back after a breakdown to overcome tough opposition from Kevin Mackrell to win the Glyn Scott Trophy for fastest sports car and to take out third fastest time of day. He acknowledged the assistance given to him by Gary Cossor who came to his rescue to fix the problem. Michael Collins in his Subaru broke his own record to win his class, the Vince Appleby Trophy for fastest sedan and posted the 5th fastest time of day.

Glen Wesener was another to benefit from the assistance of others to make the repairs necessary to get him back on track after an 'off'. This allowed him to post a time closer to a record than any other historic car and thus he won the Hamilton Trophy for best historic car, the first time the award had been won by an historic sedan. Darren Harris won the Martin Tighe Trophy for best Formula Ford.

Many thanks to all competitors, particularly those who travelled from interstate for the event, to all those who made the event possible and to John English (MP for Redlands) and Cllr Murray Elliott of Redland City Council for coming to present trophies. Thanks also to our 'regular' presenters of the special trophies - Ann Thomson (Glyn Scott Trophy), Joan Appleby (Vince Appleby Trophy) and Dean Tighe (Martin Tighe Trophy).
