CARSELLING.COM.AU QLD HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIPS,
5-6 June, 2010 |
|
Magic Queensland Winter
weather, a venue in absolute tiptop condition, a strong and varied entry list, a good team of volunteer
workers and a large crowd of appreciative spectators made for a wonderful
weekend of competition at the Carselling.com.au Queensland
Hillclimb Championships marred only by the major damage sustained to a couple of
cars and the minor
damage sustained by a couple more. Fortunately it was
only cars that sustained damage.
Three records were broken: Mike Allen came out on top
after a tight tussle with Steve Purdy to take the Group S record, Barry Evans
set a new MG
record and Bill Norman lowered the previous record for
sports cars (open) up to 2000cc a total of three times leaving it at an
incredible 39.06 sec.
Not surprisingly Bill also took out second place
outright just beating Warwick Hutchinson into third place even though Warwick
did a personal best to post a 39.13 while the title of Qld Hillclimb
Champion with fastest time of day was won by Peter Gumley (NSW) with a 38.34.
Peter Gumley also won the Accurate Suspension Top Total
a beautiful glass trophy handmade by Pauline Graham while Bill Norman won
the Glyn Scott Trophy for Fastest time by a sports car. Winners of the
other major trophies were Hayden Cooper (Martin Tighe Trophy for
best Formula Ford0, Michael Collins (Vince Appleby Trophy for fastest time
by a sedan), Alan
McConnell (Paul Aitken Trophy for best average time by a
motorcycle powered >
car) and Mike Allen (Hamilton Trophy for best
performance by an historic car).
Our thanks go to our special presenters who took the
time to come along for the presentation of trophies. They were our Club Patron,
Dick Johnson, who spent the whole afternoon watching the event accompanied
for some of the time by son, Steve, and grandson as well; Murray Elliot
(Deputy Mayor of Redland City Council), Peter Dowling (State MP for
Redlands) and John
English (former State MP for Redlands and donor of the
trophy for Fastest time by a Queenslander).
Many thanks to all those who made the event such a
success: our tireless team of volunteer officials and workers, our quality
field of competitors and our sponsors who helped to make it all possible.
Thanks also to the newspapers in the nearby areas for their superb coverage
of our forthcoming events which helps to maintain a strong and
knowledgeable spectator presence.
