HILL CLIMBING - Come and try
the thinking drivers motor sport!
Hill climbing is the motor sport discipline for the thinking
driver. At the MG Car Club’s exhilarating Mt. Cotton venue you can
experience all the challenges that hill climbing offers - testing
your ability and your car’s performance on the undulating 980m track
- competing against other cars in your class - or just spending the
day trying to better your previous time. |
How hard you try is entirely up to you - there are no
other cars on the track to obstruct or to be obstructive (or for
you to blame!).All you need is a CAMS level 2 license, a roadworthy vehicle, an
approved helmet and “neck to knee” non flammable clothing. Your
car will need to be scrutineered for safety and class compliance,
and headlight protectors and blue battery indicator triangles
attached. You're then ready for a unique motor sport experience!
A friendly, family atmosphere prevails at Mt Cotton - an ideal day
out for your family and friends. Between each run you can chat with
other drivers, perhaps solicit some advice - or just spend time with
family and friends. Light refreshments are available from the
canteen, or you are welcome to bring your own picnic lunch.
Newcomers are encouraged to be “adopted” by an experienced
competitor, who will be only too pleased to offer advice on car
preparation and just how to best approach the special challenges
that Mt cotton offers. Come along.
The entry fee is very affordable.
Join like minded enthusiasts for a
safe, yet challenging day of motor sport. Both novice drivers and
“old hands” have much to learn from just one day at Mt Cotton hill
climb.
MGCC (Qld) owns and operates one of Australia's most interesting
Hill Climb Circuits at Mt. Cotton. Built by enthusiastic club
members, the first meeting was conducted in March, 1968. Since then, events
have been conducted on a regular basis, offering an exciting day for
both spectators and competitors.
Competitors vie for both class and
outright honours, as well as the challenge of the hill itself.
The track is bitumen sealed, 946m
long, and unique in that it includes downhill, as well as uphill
gradients. We see Mt. Cotton as a very
important aspect of our club, providing the opportunity to foster
motor sport for beginners, as well as more experienced competitors,
and feel this to be very much in the spirit of MG.
WORKING BEES
Working Bees are
vital activities to ensure that Mt Cotton Hill Climb remains
viable. Without good numbers of workers, the Club could not
afford to maintain this facility.
PLEASE NOTE:
TRESPASSING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and ALL TRESPASSERS WILL BE REPORTED TO THE POLICE - NO EXCEPTIONS! |
HELPERS WANTED
Most of us seem to be unaware, and
take for granted, the presence of the numerous officials who
make our Hillclimbs possible.
In order to lessen the load on
these regular volunteers, it is vital that additional people come
forward to be trained for these tasks. It's lots of fun, you have a great view of the action, and we
serve a great lunch!!
See us at Mt Cotton or phone John Davies on 3341 6798.

WORKING BEE
- WEDNESDAY, 3rd September, 2008 |
|
Only ten days to go before our next event, so it was very pleasing to see a
record number of helpers at the working bee at Mount Cotton on September
3rd.
Much was achieved, from watering, adding our new "delay light", laying
cables in trenches and generally enhancing our systems to greatly speed up
our set up and strip down times at each event.
Electrical installations in the timing shed were completed by Aubrey, with
valuable assistance from Allan.
|
The new sound monitoring
enhancements, allowing monitoring to take place anywhere on the
circuit and be read from the comfort and safety of the timing shed,
was successfully tested.
There's still plenty to be done, so please try to make it to our
next working bee (Sunday 7th.) and Mid Week, Wednesday 10th.

WORKING BEE
- WEDNESDAY, 20th August, 2008 |
|
Wednesday 20th August saw the commencement of the long awaited work to
supply power, water and communications via underground cables and pipes to
the timing shed, and permanent cabling for the split timing lights, start
and finish lights, and other hardware on the circuit. When complete, set up
and strip down of the timing, power and communication elements will be much
faster and easier.
More work to be done at a special working bee next Tuesday (26th August), so
please try to be able to spare some time for us on that day.

WORKING BEE
- EXHIBITION WEDNESDAY |
|
The Exhibition Wednesday working bee saw the same old faces yet again, but
the day was most successful. Two hundred square meters of turf, along with a
similar area of topsoil, was put down alongside the track on the first hill,
around the canteen pavers, and adjacent to the fence at the dam. Duly fertilized
and watered, and once taken hold, this will greatly enhances the
visual appeal of the venue. Future mid week working bees will
have plenty of watering required, an ideal job for some of our
retired ladies. Thanks and congratulations to those who were
able to attend.

SWAP & NATTER DAY
- 20 JULY, 2008 |
|
On Sunday, July 20th July, the Club opened the hillclimb, not for a speed
event, but for a Swap Meet and Open Day. With a good number of people
arriving in MGs (including people from the Darling Downs and Hervey Bay
Chapters), an impromptu car display was quickly assembled to add another
feature to the day.
For a first-time event, the response was quite rewarding with about 25
stallholders taking advantage of the Swap Meet and many more lookers/buyers
coming along to either view the 'goods' on offer, to view the venue at
leisure and, for many, to walk the course.
|
It was gratifying to have four Redland City Councillors, including the
Mayor, accept our invitation to come along to meet us and to view our
facility. They gave willingly and generously of their time and expressed
their surprise and also appreciation at having such a wonderful venue
within their Shire. We thank them for taking the time to come and meet with us.
The majority of stallholders seemed to be happy with their sales,
particularly the two who quickly sold vehicles on the day! The willing
canteen workers were kept steadily busy during the day as were those
manning the Club's Regalia stall.
